The Streets department has finished a traffic calming study on two sections of Chestnut Hill and have approved speed hump installations for both. The 600 block of West Mermaid Lane and the 7700 Block of Saint Martins Lane. We’ll be working with residents on both these streets to get the necessary petition signatures to the Streets department to get these installed as soon as possible.

Are you a resident of either of these blocks? Please email us at calming@chforward.org.

Why Your Block Needs Speed Humps

As a Philadelphia resident, you want your neighborhood to be safe and livable. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by having speed humps installed on your block. Here’s why you should consider requesting them from the Streets Department:

Dramatically Improved Safety

Speed humps are proven to reduce vehicle speeds and accidents. Studies show they can lower the odds of child pedestrian injuries by 53-60%. In a city where children play on residential streets, this could literally save lives.

Calmer, Quieter Streets

By forcing drivers to slow down, speed humps create a calmer environment with less traffic noise. This makes your block more pleasant for walking, biking, and outdoor activities.

Minimal Inconvenience

Modern speed humps are designed to allow emergency vehicles and buses to pass with minimal slowdown. For regular drivers, the slight delay is a small price to pay for a safer neighborhood.

Easy to Request

If you don’t live on the two blocks above that already have approval, but you would like to see them on yours, Philadelphia has a straightforward process for requesting traffic calming measures like speed humps. Just reach out to the Streets department here or ask us for help (calming@chforward.org).
